Intensive Care Unit
A loved one’s critical illness and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission can be particularly stressful for the families who often feel overwhelmed and helpless. The feeling of uncertainty, the fear of potential loss, ‘not knowing’, and ‘the waiting’ further adds to the stress of families and can negatively impact on their physical and psychological wellbeing.
The ICU team values the important roles families play in the care of critically ill patients, and endeavours to provide families with as much support as possible through this journey.
We are fundraising in order to support several projects.
Our department has been working to improve the experience of ICU care for families and patients, having conducted two surveys on Family Satisfaction and Family Needs of the ICU Waiting Room, and developed resources for Children Visiting the ICU.
- Fundraising would help support the next stage of this work, which would include installing a ‘virtual window’ with images of the nature in the ICU waiting room, improving signage for visitors, developing an information booklet for visiting the ICU.
- Fundraising would also help to support research projects initiated by our ICU staff, such as trialling novel ways of helping patients to recover strength.
Thank you for any support that you may be able to give!

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital has 30 beds, divided between Intensive Care and High Dependency areas. It supports both emergency and elective admissions. In addition to a range of general medical and general surgical patients requiring life support and other advanced therapies, we also routinely care for patients after cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, and liver transplantation.
The multidisciplinary team strives to provide the best possible care for each individual patient.
